People began trading on financial outcomes well before the advent of the Internet.
The stock markets, commodities markets, foreign exchange markets and secondary
markets for mortages all represent a form of trading on financial outcomes.
And computer-driven trading of stocks, whether by large institutional investors or
individuals operating through online brokerages, was one of the first big and socially
acceptable uses of the Internet in business.
But over the course of the last few years, a new form of trading has emerged in the
financial sector.
No assets change hands in this form of trading. So traders are not buying gold or
actual stock certificates or foreign currency.
Instead, traders are taking a position on an asset. Will a foreign currency be higher or
lower than a certain price when the market closes? Will an index close above or below
a certain point? Will the price of oil rise or fall below a certain point?
Binary options are similar to a futures contract where the trader predicts where the
price will be in a certain timeframe, known as the “expiration”.
